Derek Ellis is a Director of Photography based in Long Beach, California, whose work has taken him around the world capturing visually compelling stories. Originally from Port Townsend, Washington, he graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree from Northern Arizona University, building a strong foundation that informs his technical precision and creative approach.

With a focus on cinematography, Derek brings a refined eye for composition and a deep expertise in understanding and controlling light to every project. His work spans documentary, corporate, and broadcast productions, including programs for Investigation Discovery, NBC, and Science Channel. He has collaborated with clients such as Edwards Lifesciences, Google, United Way, PBS SoCal, the American Institute of Architects, BBC World News, and ZEISS Optics, consistently delivering polished, story-driven visuals.

Outside of his professional work, Derek enjoys camping and practicing film photography, pursuits that continue to shape his visual sensibility. Driven by curiosity and a passion for collaboration, he is always seeking new opportunities and stories to help bring to life through the lens.
